The Killing Jar
R.S. McCoy
Release Date: June 28th, 2016
Earth is dying, circling the drain on life support. The future of the human race depends on space exploration, but they’re running out of time. Parasitic insects are systematically killing the best scientific minds but no one knows why.
Mable Wilkinson is the last hope to figure it out, she just doesn’t know it yet. For years, her resourcefulness, intelligence, and penchant for problem-solving have put her at the top of a very short list of researchers, only she doesn’t want to be part of it.
Cast out at sixteen, Mable wrote off the problems of the world long ago. Now, her focus is on Hadley, her adopted little sister, and teaching her to survive in the cut-throat underground. Instead, both Mable and Hadley fall into the hands of the program’s recruiter, Silas Arrenstein, and he’s determined to have one of them. Mable can join up with the man and program who killed her brother, or she can leave Hadley to the same fate.

Review:
Just about a month ago, I did the cover reveal for The Killing Jar, and here we are on release day and I am so excited about it! Let’s go slightly back in time and I discovered Rachel and her books when I did the review for The Lightning Luminary. I was so deeply touched when Rachel reached out and offered me the opportunity to read and review The Killing Jar as well.
So let me get started!
It has strong similarities with The Lightning Luminary, as we have a number of characters with each their own PoV chapters. At first, I was worried I would have a hard time keeping up, but no worries it was easy as the story progressed and the characters started coming together more and more. Or at least make more sense and start my own guessing games and predictions as to some people in there.
As I was reading The Killing Jar, I could not help myself thinking that this is what my favourite Sci-Fi tv show or movies were made of. It kind of reminded me of Dark Matter and even a little of Killjoys that are soon coming back for their season 2. The book, is smart, dark and gritty at time and is not scared of showing characters going out of their way making bad decisions even when they are not bad people at heart. I really like that and I loved embracing it because we it made the characters real and relatable.
You know me and my habit of not wanting to give out spoilers, but I do feel here some will come out because well I am left with questions and speculations, I do love those! Some may have noticed them especially with my Louisiangel Series reviews (Poor Cheryl, I am always trying to guess where she is going next) but I believe that is what makes books great, they engage you, you love and feel for and with the characters and go on the journey with them.
So who do we have here?
We have Mable and she is an angry one, Theo who royally messed up, Silas who is in a tough spot and in Mable’s bad books and so many more. There is Abraham, and I think I know who he is though it is super hard right now not to put it out there and as I finished reading I started wondering about the little 2 year old he is super close to and if he is related to….. (spoiler!! I am not saying)!!!!!!
Once you have read the book and come back to this post, I do believe you will know where I am going with this, and if you do not… I would be more than happy to take suggestions and discuss….
I consider Mable to be the central main character and she is fantastically well written, do not get me wrong they all are. But Mable has really gown on me and is my special one! I find her amazing and so well rounded and capable of so much, especially when you look into her history and her interactions with Silas. Throughout that first book in the series, you already see her evolve and I know that so much more is going to happen.
In opposition, though I liked and empathised with Theo at first, for me he devolved and got worse until he hit that one major turning point, I do not know what the story has in reserve for him, but I am better that it could be interesting as he is teamed up with Mable.
I wanted to cover Silas a little, but with him I feel like I would open myself and revealing a lot more and give away spoilers and frankly, I would be doing you all a great disservice.
For this very reason, what I am going to do here is tell you, that if you love Sci Fi or even if you do not, this is an amazing book and I have the feeling it is going to take us on a ride and it is going to be EPIC! I can almost safely say that this series is going to join my list of “Obsession” books for sure!
Thank you Rachel for the opportunity, I would have hated not knowing about The Killing Jar and missing out!
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I made the connection between Abraham and you know who as being the same person, but I didn’t even think that Kellan could be related. I was curious why McCoy just dropped that revelation and didn’t expand on it, but I think you’re on to something. Oh, now I’m intrigued! This keeps getting better. Also, I don’t think there is any redemption for Theo. It might be since he’s teamed with Mable, but I won’t like it. lol I’ll be really upset though if they end up a couple. That’s a ship that needs to be sunk right now.
Maybe I went too far for Kellan, but you know how he is super attached to Abraham… so I don’t know for sure but it kept popping up in the back of my mind!
I am still undecided for Theo, sometimes I think he may redeem himself and other times, it is more #HatingTheo. It really depends how it goes in book 2.
What I am curious about is mostly concerning the varieties of bugs and where the hell do they come from… I hope we get some more answers soon enough!
Thanks so much for visiting Elle, I hope to see you again!
You know Elle I don’t know that the idea of Kellan and Abraham being you know what came to me. Not sure it is either my overactive imagination or it could be something else.
Theo messed up so bad and that boy is going to be working very very hard to redeem himself. I don’t know… it’s like Jamie Lannister, I so hated him in the books in the early day and little by little as he grew well so did my liking for him. So I don’t know. But I sure will be keeping my eyes on him for any other misbehaviors!!
As for him and Mable, I don’t know she is way too angry to be interested in boys, but at this point only Rachel knows!! Fingers crossed!!!
