Winter 1888. At an asylum in the English countryside, a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper kills an orderly and flees into the rain-soaked night. His distraught keepers summon the Lady Vivienne Cumberland—who’s interviewed their patient and isn’t sure he’s a man at all. An enigmatic woman who guards her own secrets closely, Lady Vivienne knows a creature from the underworld when she sees one. And he’s the most dangerous she’s ever encountered.

As Jack rampages through London, Lady Vivienne begins to suspect what he’s searching for. And if he finds it, the doors to purgatory will be thrown wide open…

Across the Atlantic, an archaeologist is brutally murdered after a Christmas Eve gala at the American Museum of Natural History. Certain peculiar aspects of the crime attract the interest of the Society for Psychical Research and its newest investigator, Harrison Fearing Pell. Is Dr. Sabelline’s death related to his recent dig in Alexandria? Or is the motive something darker?

As Harry uncovers troubling connections to a serial murder case she’d believed was definitively solved, two mysteries converge amid the grit and glamor of Gilded Age New York. Harry and Lady Vivienne must join forces to stop an ancient evil. The key is something called the Thirteenth Gate. But where is it? And more importantly, who will find it first?

Review:

I have waited for this baby and the minute I got it, I dropped pretty much everything I was doing and dove in!

Man oh man…

One word: Perfect!

Alright so we continue on from The Daemoniac where we met Harry and John and we continue on with their adventures as Harry is now a slightly more experienced investigator. We also have the introduction of 2 new characters Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her companion Alec Lawrence.

We were warned at the end of Queen of Chaos that we were going to see familiar characters again in this series and what a glorious thing this is!  I do not want to tell you too much because well you need to enjoy it the way I did! I really do not want to take this away from you!

We had a great mix of what for me makes a wonderful book and this series is going to be a fabulous adventure!  Between Harry and Lady Vivienne, we have a lot of badass ladies to keep us entertained and on our toes each in their own ways.

It was really good fun seeing our Harry facing what she did not really believe in head on and getting a feel of it all through her eyes.

I really think that in this volume we get a better sense on how the series will go on, especially if we are combining the 2 leading couples, an ex-baddie from times long gone and who knows some other beloved ones making an apparition.

Alright, so you do not need to have read The Fourth Element series to enjoy this book or the one before; you would need to have read book 1 as this is following the events of the The Daemoniac and I would say it would not hurt to have read The Fourth Element series because it gives an extra something to really appreciate The Thirteenth Gate!

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you would know that I am obsessed with The Fourth Element series especially with my heroic couple Darius and Nazafareen!  I am sad to say that they did not make an appearance here, but there is hope I will see them again at some point in this series (Please Kat!!!!)

You really see how much love and care was put into the writing of this book and every single time I am blow away by Kat’s raw talent in sucking us in the atmosphere like we are right there going through the events with the characters.

Frankly, I did not put it down until the last page, and even then I wanted more!  Now I wonder how long it will take to the next book, I am addicted what can I say?

Since we already know roughly where the next story is going to take place, I cannot wait as I am now in countdown mode until we have a release date.

Kat, once again you have surpassed yourself and managed to amaze me even though I knew I was holding something epic in my hands (or in my kindle, I kinda needs all your books as hard copies to go back and reference things easier lol).

I am going to highly recommend The Thirteenth Gate and encourage you to read everything that came before it as well!
