She never knew nightmares.
Until she became mine.
She was a ballerina.
He was a serial killer.
She ran away from him.
He caught her.
She begged for mercy.
He gave her none.
She was an angel.
He was a monster.
She wanted to escape.
He wanted to destroy her.
They were at war.
And only one of them would win.
I love VF Mason’s books and I have reviewed a few of them on this blog; if I remember correctly the last one I did was Sovietnik’s Fury, so it has been a while since I have read one of her books.
So you can imagine when Lachlan’s Protege came out; I could not resist.
This book is pretty much in line with all of the others that I have read, and the Socio series is still my favorite.
I love Socio, what can I tell you?
In this book, well the story is close to what happened to Socio and our dear Pakhan, so it really comes from a very dark premise. So, there are some really hard moments in there and I would like to caution sensitive souls that you may not enjoy it.
I didn’t.
I am not against getting a blast of cold hard reality so that I never forget that though I am reading fiction, this still happens in the real world out there and it is important not to swipe it under the rug and pretend ignorance.
V. F. Mason’s style is very much in your face and is sure not protecting you from that reality.
For me, that has always been a huge part of the strength of these books and why I love them so much.
Here the story is centered around Lachlan and his revenge!
Same as with Socio, I really see where he is coming from. I do not condone that behavior, but it doesn’t mean that I cannot empathize. Lachlan… dude I get it!
Everything in this book and the others are about making us the readers side with the main guys, though morally and normally we wouldn’t and shouldn’t. It takes talent to do that!
If you enjoy Dark Fantasies, then this is the book for you and I would really encourage you to grab the others if you are not familiar with them. I truly enjoyed it, and I am a huge fan of V. F. Mason’s work.
I am going to highly recommend it and I really hope you love it as much as I did.
As a side note and in no way part of the review; I would like to point out that the title ought to be “Lachlan’s Protégée” and not “Lachlan’s Protégé” as the Protégée in question is a woman and not a man. I could not say anything before I read the book and understood the reference in the title. The Frenchie that I am, is quite OCD about things like that, but usually, it is about the words Fiancé and Fiancée.
V.F.Mason always loved reading books and had quite a few fights with her momma over the genre she liked (romance, duh!) She studied filmmaking and thought that would feed her desire for stories, but that didn’t happen.
Finally, when she was tired of all those voices in her head, she sat down and wrote a book. It was a huge decision to make and she thanks her friends and family for supporting her in it.When she is not writing, she can be found with her friends doing all sorts of crazy things or reading recent romance books that were written by her favorite authors.
